Born in Orléans, France, in 1955, Bernard Mens has pursued a five-decade career as a continuous evolution of sight. From the formal portraiture of his early years in Morocco, including commissions for King Hassan II, to his decades-long immersion in Senegal, his brush has always sought the soul beneath the surface.
Through his signature technique, the meticulous layering of traditional oil glazes (glacis), he achieves a painstakingly detailed yet masterfully blurred effect. This smoky, atmospheric approach envelops each canvas in a mysterious ambiance, inviting the viewer to look past the physical form.
Working from his coastal studio in Senegal, Bernard remains a philosopher-artist, capturing the silent energy that weaves our lives, our cultures and our universe into one vibrating tapestry.
